THIS PAPER ISSUED TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS, ONE DOLLAR A YEAR. l 1 1 Volume XV Lenoir, N. C, Tuesday, October 21, 1913 No. 100 UTE REAL ESM TRANSFERS. Considerable Activity in Land Deal in and Around Lenoir. Real estate in and about Le noir is continuing to interest those looking for good safe in vestments and deals in this line are increasing each week. This all tends to show that our town is considered a good safe one by those who have funds to invest and that they have plenty of confidence in this section. Messrs. Bush & Hartley, the live real estate agents of Leuoir, report the following transfers made to date: Mr. W. G. Cloer has sold his place in Lenoir to Mr. Wade Laxton of Kings Creek. The deal being closed the first of last week. Mr. Laxton is a leading citizen of his section and we are pleased to know that he is ac quiring property in our town. Mr. Cloer after selling his place then bought the Cicero Hush property in this place. This is a nice new home and is one of the most desirable pieces of proierty we have in the resident section. Mr. Mack Parks last week bought the I vey Hush property which lis also a new residence and a most desirable one. MATRIMONY AND THE INCOME TAX. The new income tax regula tions provide an additional ex emption for men of family, but otherwise do not add greatly to the charms of matrimony. Mar ried men will be exempt from the tax if their annual income does not exceed $4, OCX), but un married men will be entitled to an exemption of only Svl.OOO and on any excess over this amount they will be required to pay one ier cent, with a surtax on an income of more than $"-'0, UK). Therefore, a bachelor with an income ol 4,0U() will pay a yearly tax of $10 which, by marriage, he can escape. The fact that the tax dates from March :i. l.)Kl, causes The Phil adelphia Record to inquire "Could a bachelor by marrying now avoid payment of the en tire $10, or would he be entitled only to a part of the married man's bonus proportionate to the number of months for which he takes up the burdens of mat rimony?" The Record figures that in the latter case the bach elor "would gain only K5 cents by marrying today." The University of North Caro lina last week sent out the very interesting news that the debates between the graded schools will be conducted this year after the plan of last year under the di rection of the literary societies of the University. The subject chosen for this year is Initiative and Referendum in North Caro Una. It will be remembered that last year Hickory, Lenoir and Morganton formed one of the debating triangles, and Morgan ton came out victorious, thus gaining the privilege of going to Chapel Hill. It is generally un derstood that the same arrange mentwill be used this year, and Lenoir shows her pluck after de feat in insisting ujion having the triangle so arranged that she will have a chance to meet Mor ganton again. The debates have been scheduled for the first of March. Morganton News-Herald. THE SNOW STORM THE OAK IN THE STORM. Do you wish to see a real heart story of today?
